  1. I was sorry to read about Jim’s death in an update from the Rail Passengers Association. My sincere condolences to the family. I got a lot of useful information out of both this blog and Jim’s books, and I will certainly miss reading his thoughts.

  2. Having ridden with Jim on numerous train trips I saw first hand a man who truly appreciated traveling by train. the train itself was only part of it as he relished meeting and talking with the crew and fellow passengers. His writing gave us a true view of his enjoyment.

Side note- yes I heard some of his stories repeated several times. will cherish them all.

  3. Jim was just acknowledged to all of us attending Rail Nation by Jim Mathews and we are sending our gratitude, appreciation and thoughts with you all.

  4. His 2nd edition of All Aboard! (1998) was very useful for my first long distance passenger train trip in a sleeper in 2000.

And I was even thinking of asking Jim if, in his next edition, he would bring back hotel suggestions that he included in earlier editions; I found them interesting and helpful.

Best of luck to you, Jim

  5. I’m going to miss all of Jim’s travel experience and thoughts. I have a lot of ideas from reading his tales. Please wish him well from a regular reader for years.

  6. So sorry to hear this. This blog was the first thing I read each morning. I want to thank Jim again for his latest book. I’m starting to plan my annual train trek for this summer and I learned many things from reading his book that I can put to good use. I will miss having someone in the islands to share train stories with. My best to Jim and his whole family.

  7. To Jim and his family…I’ve never been on an overnight train ride but am planning one in the near future. I stumbled upon Jim’s Amtrak roomette suggestions and found them insightful and practical….and delightfully written. Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. With prayers and best wishes as you travel along the tracks.

  8. Thanks Jim for all your years of tips and information about train travel around the world. As a fellow train enthusiast I have ridden many transit and LD trains in Europe, the UK, and North America and I always looked forward to your reports on the systems I have yet to ride!
    God bless you.
