Say Hello to a REAL Traveler.
Here in the Islands, we call this little guy a kolea … the Hawaiian word for plover. Or, as the serious ornithologists prefer, a Pacific Golden Plover. We’ve had a pair of these birds in our pasture since early last Fall. They’ll be around for another month or so before taking off for their summer home in either Alaska or Siberia. Imagine that! It’s more than 2000 miles over open ocean. Non-stop. What’s more, those two kolea will be back in our pasture again next winter. The very same two birds. Sometimes I stand at the pasture fence and just look at them.
