And Now It’s Off to Europe.

I’ll do my best to keep posting over the next few days, but I’m really going to be keeping to a tight schedule.

Tomorrow night I’ll be flying out of Boston on an overnight Icelandair flight to Reykjavik and then on to Zurich. From there, I’m catching a train to the Swiss town of Chur. It’s the Swiss terminus for the Bernina Express which has to be one of the most spectacular train rides in the world. I’ll be riding the entire route, from Chur over the Alps to the Italian town of Tirano. It’s a little more than a 4-hour ride and the engineering that was necessary to create this rail line is really astonishing.

There are many bridges, all built of stone. I’m not sure how long ago they were built, but ill try to provide some additional information when I get to Tirano.

Berninareise Kreisviadukt von Brusio
This viaduct was built so the train could gain enough elevation to begin its ascent into the Italian Alps. It, like the bridges, was constructed of stone blocks.

After a night in Tirano, I’ll be taking trains from there to Milan, train again from there to Florence, and finally from Florence to Siena. What’s not to like about all that?
