Paved Paradise (Moiliili)
At the end of a listless day indoors, my sister and I decide to walk to Maple Garden restaurant a few blocks away to pick up our Chinese take-out dinner. On the way, a misty, warm rain begins to fall. We almost turn around to get the car, then decide to keep on walking.
A rainbow appears. It’s the first one I’ve seen since arriving, which is notable since in Hawaii rainbows appear almost every day. (Later, I find out Oahu is experiencing a drought.)
As usual, I take the rainbow to be some kind of signal or omen; perhaps it’s a greeting from K and mom. I imagine K saying, both relieved and exasperated, “Look, they finally got out of the house!”
